Antennas: Advanced Technology Integrated/Custom
Our vast experience in antenna technology (over 1,000
designs) offers a solid starting point toward customization for any need. Conformal (built
into existing structure) aircraft and shipboard antennas typically allow for larger antenna
apertures that can be tuned more efficiently, yielding higher gain and better coverage
than standard bolt-on antennas. Co-location of several antenna functions is also
possible within these larger structures. The introduction of EDO heritage electronics
capabilities (diplexers, switching matrices, Butler matrices, preamplifiers, filters
and beam forming networks) within the antenna structure is a natural progression which
can improve overall system
performance.
Typical airborne installations include vertical stabilizers, fincaps, ventral fins, wing
leading edges and access doors. We have produced products for numerous platforms such
as the AV-8B Harrier, F-2, F-5, F-16, F-18, T-38, Boeing 737, AH-1 and OH-58 helicopters
and various unmanned air vehicles.
Examples of shipboard installations include wall panels, periscopes or composite masts. Our DF360-1 Circular Array Interferometer is one prime example of a highly integrated submarine mast structure.
One specialized ground
product is our CA 1530 Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE) tower mounted antenna
system for the monitoring of airport ground traffic. This shaped beam reflector utilizes
a lightweight composite reflector and circularly polarized 15 GHz feed which is used
in concert with both Northrop Grumman (Norden) and Thompson (Cardion) equipment.
Airborne conformal designs also lend themselves to the addition of LO or RCS technologies which can be incorporated for both new and existing airborne and shipboard platforms. Prior experience with LO antenna requirements has been demonstrated for several platforms and we recently enhanced our existing capabilities with a new strategic partner.
An alternate approach
to LO conformal antennas or for low ground clearance platforms is a retractable blade
antenna that can be deployed when required. Our C177 and CNI29 series are examples of
these 1.5 to 1220 MHz capable units that can deploy or retract within seconds, even under
full aerodynamic load.
Broadband (3.0:1 bandwidth) horn antennas such as our RFS series provide typical VSWR
levels of 1.4:1 over the 6 to18 GHz frequency range. Commonly used for anechoic chamber
threat simulation testing these antennas provide excellent amplitude and phase tracking.
Our expertise, which spans the HF through MMW frequency range, combined with our ability
to bring a concept to a production product regardless of the particular platform's environment,
permits us to custom design an antenna for any application. Design experience encompasses
single standard apertures through multiband, multielement arrays for the most severe
vibration and temperature (300 degrees Fahrenheit continuous, 3000 degrees Fahrenheit
short duration) environments, including artillery shells and space.
