Composites: Design & Development

Both EDO Fiber Science in Salt Lake City, Utah and EDO Specialty Plastics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana are fully staffed and equipped to provide complete design, development, tooling, prototype fabrication, testing, and certification services for a variety of composite products. This capability encompasses many different materials and manufacturing processes.

CONCEPTS AND TRADE STUDIES
Nearly every one of the composite structures produced today started out as metallic components, whether they were cast, machined, or welded up from flat plate. At some point, somebody decided that the weight, cost, or corrosion associated with the metal design was unacceptable. This is where the composites design engineer takes over.

EDO Fiber Science uses computer model techniques to develop baseline designs, incorporate features, define space claims and interface requirements. Preliminary assessments of cost, weight and performance can be performed at this point. Scale models and small test articles are often constructed, depending on the customer's qualification requirements.

Elements of a productive trade study might include costs (initial purchase, transportation, installation, check-out, operating, spares, repair, and total life cycle), service life expectancy, failure modes and effects, weights, and schedule.

PROTOTYPES AND LINER DEVELOPMENT
EDO Fiber Science uses many different types of metallic and nonmetallic liners to produce composite vessels. The construction of prototypes allows for demonstration of product features without the expense of full scale or operational components.

ANALYSIS AND CERTIFICATION
Both EDO Fiber Science and EDO Specialty Plastics business areas have the capability to analyze and certify new designs and products. Analysis techniques and tools include FEA, FMECA, COSMOS-M, and are performed internally.

Upon completion of required testing, products designed and developed by EDO Specialty Plastics and EDO Fiber Science are certified for sale and use both internally and through outside certification agencies.
