EDO
Specialty Plastics developed FIBERBOND®, advanced composite piping systems in 1981,
from the discoveries made during a special U.S. Navy program aimed at improving the
general design and durability of fiberglass pipe for shipboard service. Today, FIBERBOND®
piping is in service with customers around the world.
FIBERBOND® advanced composite piping systems have been successfully deployed on ships, offshore oil & gas platforms, and in chemical and industrial plants, filling critical customer needs for reliable and cost-effective composite piping systems.
OFFSHORE PIPING SYSTEMS
FIBERBOND® pipe systems have been used in continuous service aboard offshore oil
platforms for over fifteen years. Piping systems EDO Specialty Plastics remain the preferred
solution for all deepwater projects in the Gulf of Mexico. From preliminary layout of
the processing facility and safety systems through installation and certification, EDO
simplifies and expedites the entire process. This expertise has been applied to oil
and gas development projects around the world.
System Applications include:
Offshore Projects using FIBERBOND® pipe include:
INDUSTRIAL/PETROCHEMICAL PLANT PIPING
EDO Specialty Plastics was originally founded to serve the needs of the chemical/petrochemical
industry on and near the Gulf Coast region. FIBERBOND® pipe systems are proven standards
in caustic chlorine plants, phosphoric acid plants, and pulp and paper mills. Corrosive
services including wet chlorine gas, super phosphoric acid and chlorine dioxide have
been handled with piping from EDO Specialty Plastics.
CONDUCTIVE PIPING FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS
The United States Coast Guard has conferred its "Subchapter Q" Type Approval on two
new, electrically conductive versions of FIBERBOND®, Advanced Composite Piping produced
by EDO Specialty Plastics, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. EDO Specialty Plastics has now received
the first four Coast Guard Approval Certificates for nonmetallic pipe used in firewater
systems in the marine industry. The company designs, manufactures, and installs the
world's only USCG approved nonmetallic piping for offshore oil platform and marine applications.
The new Coast Guard certificates complement previously issued approvals of FIBERBOND®, composite piping for Firewater Ring Main and Dry Deluge piping in nonhazardous areas. Prior to this new approval, the use of normally nonconductive fiberglass pipe has been limited to nonhazardous areas of ships and platforms. This required that piping engineers desiring the lower life cycle costs and improved fire performance of composite pipe were forced to transition to conductive (metallic) pipe in all platform or ship areas classified as "hazardous". The new USCG approval satisfies all Coast Guard fire endurance requirements and IMO Res. A-753 (18) guidelines for use of conductive plastic piping in firewater and other systems. The new approvals cover FIBERBOND® Series 20JF-C (Jet Fire - Conductive) and Series 20FR-EC (Fire Retardant - Exterior Applications - Conductive) piping systems, which are available now EDO Specialty Plastics.
DECK DRAIN SYSTEMS
Used in conjunction
with nonhazardous drain piping systems, EDO has developed a series of all-composite
fiberglass drains for use on open decks, and under skids. These can be very small and
conformal to fit in tight spaces, or very large in order to catch spills and waste from
under massive skid assembles. Custom sizes and shapes are available. Special materials
can be incorporated to provide protection from corrosive or caustic materials.
COLUMN PIPING
FIBERBOND®
column pipe has been supplied to shipyards and skid suppliers in many countries for
marine and firewater supply applications. New versions of lightweight, large diameter,
lower cost piping for marine ballast water systems are presently being designed. These
are being developed to address the special needs of shipbuilding companies who use ballast
piping in areas between hulls or other impossible to reach areas.
INSTALLATION SERVICES
EDO Specialty Plastics is the only supplier of advanced composite piping that offers
complete, single-source supply of design, fabrication, and installation of fully warranted
systems for marine, offshore, and industrial market applications. FIBERBOND® Pipe
Systems are designed, produced, installed, tested, and certified as complete systems.
PIPE FITTINGS AND STUB FLANGES
EDO Specialty Plastics
and EDO Fiber Science fabricate all the required components and fittings for use with
FIBERBOND® pipe systems. These include all nonconductive stub flanges that are produced
using the Resin-Transfer-Molding, (RTM) composite molding process.
INSTALLATION OF PIPE SYSTEMS
EDO Specialty Plastics is the only supplier of advanced composite
piping that offers complete, single-source supply of design, fabrication, and installation
of fully warranted systems for marine, offshore, and industrial market applications.
FIBERBOND® Pipe Systems are designed, produced, installed, tested, and certified
as complete systems.
In
1999, FIBERBOND® piping was designed, built and then shipped to Subic Bay in the
Philippines for the Shell Malampaya project. A EDO field crew installed all composite
piping used in the subsea section of the offshore platform. We have similar international
experience with crews working in Africa and Australia. Trained crews are likewise available
for dispatch to Europe, Asia, and South America.
EDO
Specialty Plastics maintains highly skilled crews of mechanics and supervisors, to allow
the simultaneous completion of several "field jobs" at once. It is not unusual for EDO
to have crews at two or more major shipyards and multiple chemical/industrial plants
at any given time. If your plant uses fiberglass piping and faces the cost typically
associated with even a "planned" shutdown, you need experts from EDO Specialty Plastics
on the job, to finish on time and on budget.
In
1999, the EDO Specialty Plastics team working at the Subic Bay yard in the Philippines
was selected by the customer as being the shipyard's "Outstanding Installation Subcontractor.
OFFSHORE PIPING HOOKUP
EDO's expert field service personnel are also called upon frequently to connect, check
out, commission, repair, and replace piping on platforms and ships at sea. The unique
field-friendly methods used by these technicians usually allow the process to take place
without interrupting production, or while ships remain under way.
EDO Specialty Plastics has supplied, installed, and performed offshore hookup of FIBERBOND® piping for dozens of the world's most innovative offshore platforms, including Spar's, TLP's, Compliant Tower's and FPSO's.
