EDO’s sonar history started after the Second World War, when the United States Navy asked EDO to analyze captured equipment. This analysis led to the development of the BQR-4 Sonar in the late 1940s. Since that time, EDO’s sonars have seen service in twelve navies around the world. We are proud of our heritage and of our current line of sonars which includes Hull Mounted Sonars, Passive Towed Arrays, Flank Arrays, and Active Low Frequency Towed Array Sonar (ALOFTS), our Variable Depth Active Towed Array Sonar. These sonars are all based on the most up-to-date technologies, while at the same time containing elements of our rich tradition of excellence and reliability.

EDO sonars are all Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) based. With Open System Architecture (OSA) programming, extended range of transmission parameters, sensitive receivers, and powerful processing capabilities, these sonar systems are a quantum leap in capability from their predecessors. Stand-alone or as an integrated ASW suite, they provide for the maximum extraction of acoustic intelligence.

General Description and Features
The Model 980 ALOFTS incorporates technologies that are the result of over 25 years of R&D efforts. Based on the most successful underwater towed body of the AN/SQS-35, a proven active acoustic source, advanced processor and display capabilities, and a capable passive array this 2.0 kHz system combines active and passive operations and simulaneous CW and FM processing. The Model 980 ALOFTS is ideal for both deep ocean and littoral ASW operations.

ALOFTS is the only system in the world proven to be effective against Littoral and Blue Water ASW threats. Detection, Classification, and Localization are accomplished with an active source in a variable depth towed body with an attached single line array. Advanced signal processing using COTS technologies provides for full active and passive capabilities against ALL submarines.
