EDO AWARDED CONTRACT FOR UNMANNED MINESWEEPING TECHNOLOGY
NEW YORK -- September 8, 2003 -- EDO Corporation (NYSE:EDO) ) has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Navy to demonstrate the feasibility of Unmanned Surface Vessel mine-warfare technology and the application of this technology for fleet integration. The $3.4 million award was issued by the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Va. The contract is for material, technical, and management services and includes options for further research that could increase the total value to $4 million. It runs through January 2006.
"This technology will be directly applicable to mine-warfare mission modules slated for use on the Littoral Combat Ship", said James M. Smith, EDO's chief executive officer. The LCS is being developed as a new type of smaller, high-speed combat ship. The Navy's design requirements call for a modular ship that can be quickly reconfigured in response to changes in mission, such as minesweeping.
"EDO has been designing and producing mine countermeasure systems for the Navy for more than 40 years," added Smith. "EDO's systems have been used in major minesweeping actions as far back as the Vietnam era. Most recently, our MK-105 minesweeper was used in Operation Iraqi Freedom to clear the port of Umm Qasr. Our research with the latest unmanned vessels furthers our position as a leader in mine warfare technology."
Other EDO systems of this type produced for the Navy are the Shallow Water Influence Minesweeping System (SWIMS-AN/ALQ-219) and the development-stage Organic Airborne and Surface Influence Sweep System (OASIS-AN/ALQ-220). In addition, EDO has been providing support services to the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Program Management Office (PMS-EOD) since 1984. This includes field support such as that provided to the Navy's first operational unmanned-underwater-vehicle detachment that cleared shallow-water areas in the port of Umm Qasr.
The work for the Office of Naval Research will be performed by EDO's Marine and Aircraft Systems business unit, located on Long Island, N.Y.
EDO Corporation provides military products and professional services to the United States and allied governments, and their prime defense contractors. EDO is at the core of the transformation to a lighter, faster, and smarter national defense capability.
EDO (www.edocorp.com) was founded in 1925, and is headquartered in New York City. The company expects 2003 revenues to exceed $460 million, and employs 2,800 people.
