NORWEGIAN SKJOLD-CLASS SHIPS TO BE EQUIPPED
WITH
EDO ELECTRONIC SUPPORT SYSTEMS
NEW YORK - February 5, 2004 - EDO Corporation (NYSE:EDO) has been awarded a fixed-price contract by the French naval prime contractor, Armaris, for six ES-3701 ESM electronic-support and radar-warning units, and related training. The total value of the contract is more than $10 million.
As part of the Skjold Prime Consortium, Armaris, and two Norwegian companies, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and UMOE Mandal naval shipyard, will upgrade the prototype and build five new Skjold-Class Fast-Patrol Boats for the Royal Norwegian Navy. The Skjold-Class Fast-Patrol Boats are stealth surface-effect ships with a top service speed of 60 knots. These vessels will be delivered between 2006 and 2009. One ES-3701 system will be installed on each ship, and will be used to monitor, track, and analyze radar signals. Each will be fully integrated with the combat-management system supplied by Armaris in cooperation with Kongsberg Defense Aerospace.
"EDO’s ES-3701 ESM technology is rapidly becoming recognized by our allies as the most advanced threat-detection equipment available today," said James M. Smith, EDO's chief executive officer. "We are extremely proud to be working with Armaris and the entire international consortium that will build these ships for the Royal Norwegian Navy."
The ES-3701 is the premier international ESM system for naval applications. More than 45 systems have been sold to date, many of which are already in operation providing impressive at-sea performance. A key feature is the system’s precision direction-finding at long range, even in difficult electromagnetic environments. It can be integrated into any type of combat system multi-function console, and virtually assures the ability to intercept radar threats.
The ES-3701 ESM equipment will be manufactured at EDO’s Reconnaissance and Surveillance Systems business unit, located in Morgan Hill, Calif. In addition, associated circular-array interferometer antennas will be supplied by EDO’s Antenna Products and Technologies unit in Deer Park, N.Y. This antenna technology allows constant 360-degree surveillance, providing an extremely accurate, instantaneous direction-finding capability.
