EDO TO PROVIDE EUROFIGHTER COMPONENTS
NEW YORK - March 10, 2004 - EDO MBM Technology Ltd, a unit of EDO Corporation (NYSE: EDO) has been awarded an initial contract worth £1.2 million ($2.2 million), with options of £3 million ($5.5 million), for the supply of scanning motors and drive electronics on the Eurofighter Typhoon infra-red search and track system, known as PIRATE (Passive Infra-Red Airborne Track Equipment.) The contract was awarded by Thales Optronics Ltd. following successful scanning-motor qualification trials.
The scanning motors were designed by EDO MBM Technology, which is an active development partner in the Thales PIRATE team. PIRATE represents a major advance in avionics and gives Typhoon substantial tactical advantages in air-intercept and air-ground operations.
The production contract to EDO MBM Technology is the conclusion of an extensive development and integration program meeting stringent specification and qualification demands," said Keith Tennant, purchasing manager of Thales Optronics Ltd.
The two motors supplied by EDO MBM Technology are at the heart of the EFA Typhoon PIRATE system. The scanning motor scans the field of view for heat sources as part of the target-acquisition process and the temperature-reference motor calibrates and maintains accuracy. Production will be at EDO MBM Technology’s UK facility with the first units scheduled for delivery in November 2004. A dedicated production cell will be established to support the Eurofighter Typhoon’s long-term requirements.
David Jones, managing director of EDO MBM Technology, added: "This
award recognizes our proven capability in the design and development of scanning motors
in airborne and fighting-vehicle service systems."
