EDO ADDS $21 MILLION IN CONTRACTS FOR B-1B BOMBER

NEW YORK - July 6, 2004 - During the first half of 2004, EDO Corporation (NYSE: EDO) has been awarded contracts totaling $21.3 million to maintain and upgrade the AN/ALQ-161 defensive electronics on the B-1B Bomber.

The AN/ALQ-161 electronic-countermeasures system detects and identifies adversary threat emitters and then applies the appropriate jamming technique either automatically or through operator intervention. The system’s basic hardware configuration was fielded in the mid-1980s and is still in use today. Since that time, even though the hardware configuration remains the same, EDO has fielded several software modifications that have dramatically improved system performance and significantly lowered annual operating costs.

EDO has now received contracts to support the migration of the existing software to a new state-of-the-art processor and to test upgraded jamming processes. New jamming technology will considerably enhance the capabilities of the AN/ALQ-161 system and allow mission planners to rapidly reprogram the system to address future threats.

EDO’s 2004 contracts also include engineering services related to hardware and software upgrades, and ongoing maintenance and repair of the existing operational systems.

"The AN/ALQ-161 system has protected the B-1B in several recent conflicts with an outstanding performance record," said James M. Smith, EDO’s chief executive officer. "We believe this performance record was a major factor in the December 2002 termination of a proposed replacement system. This has paved the way for AN/ALQ-161 hardware upgrades that are now underway, with several additional enhancements planned in the near future.

"Since our original deployment of the AN/ALQ-161, EDO has continually been involved with the logistical and operational support of the system. Repair services, technical support, spares provisioning, asset management, and engineering analyses are some of the types of services we provide to various Air Force agencies."
