EDO RECEIVES $7.1 MILLION CONTRACT FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
NEW YORK - March 14, 2005 - EDO Corporation (NYSE: EDO) has been awarded a $7.1 million contract from General Atomics to support the design and development of a new system, known as the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG), for stopping aircraft on carrier decks.
EDO
will provide logistics-support services that include training materials, documentation,
maintenance procedures, and spare parts. The incentive-award-fee contract covers the
60-month system design and demonstration phase. General Atomics was selected in February
by the Naval Air Systems Command as the prime contractor for this phase of the AAG program.
"A well-designed logistics process is essential for such complex and physically-demanding operational systems," said James M. Smith, EDO’s chief executive officer. "Our expertise in organizing behind-the-scenes operations will play an important role in achieving the project’s objectives and minimizing life-cycle costs over decades of expected operation."
The present arresting-gear system, which has been in operation for more than 50 years, is manpower intensive and is approaching its design operating limits. The AAG will handle heavier and faster aircraft, as well as lighter-weight unmanned air vehicles that may enter the fleet in the coming years.
The AAG is also designed to improve safety and provide a substantial cost savings by reducing operational and maintenance expense. The logistics system that EDO will design and implement is essential to achieving the intended cost savings.
The AAG will be retrofitted into existing CVN-68 (Nimitz) class aircraft carriers and installed in the new CVN-21 class carriers as they are being built. The AAG system is expected to begin shipboard operations by 2014.
EDO Corporation designs and manufactures a diverse range of products for the defense industry and commercial markets, and provides related engineering and professional services.
Major product groups include: Defense Electronics, Communications, Aircraft
Armament, Undersea Warfare, and Integrated Composite Structures. EDO’s advanced
systems are at the core of the transformation to lighter, faster, and smarter defense
capabilities.
EDO (www.edocorp.com) was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in New York City. The
company employs 2,500 people and had revenues of $536 million in 2004.
