EDO RECEIVES $17.7 MILLION CONTRACT
FOR F/A-22 AIRCRAFT ARMAMENT SYSTEM
NEW YORK - March 24, 2005 - EDO Corporation (NYSE: EDO) has been awarded a contract from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (NYSE: LMT) for continued production of its LAU-142/A AMRAAM Vertical Ejection Launcher, or AVEL, for the F/A-22 Raptor.
This
latest order, at a value not to exceed a $17.7 million, covers production of up to 24
Lot-Five aircraft. Production Lot Five will bring the total number of F/A-22 aircraft
to 107, all of which are equipped with the AVEL.
EDO’s breakthrough design has solved the engineering challenges of launching missiles at supersonic speed, at the proper trajectory, in a fraction of a second, from an internal weapons bay. Also, unlike conventional missile launchers, the AVEL requires no explosive pyrotechnic cartridges, thereby reducing logistics support and maintenance expense.
"The F/A-22 is the most advanced fighter jet in the world, and its mission depends on the flawless performance of our AVEL system," said James M. Smith, EDO’s chief executive officer. "To maintain stealth, the release must be fast enough to minimize exposure to enemy radar, but without compromising control and safe ejection. The AVEL is an example of the type of highly-engineered technology that is central to our growth strategy."
In addition to the new F/A-22 platform, EDO provides aircraft-armament equipment for many of the leading fighter jets in use today, including the F-15, F-16, and F/A-18. The company is also developing an internal launcher for the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The F-35, now under development, will be a major aircraft platform of the future.
EDO Corporation designs and manufactures a diverse range of products for the defense industry and commercial markets, and provides related engineering and professional services.
Major product groups include: Defense Electronics, Communications, Aircraft Armament, Undersea Warfare, and Integrated Composite Structures. EDO’s advanced systems are at the core of the transformation to lighter, faster, and smarter defense capabilities.
EDO (www.edocorp.com) was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in New York City. The company employs 2,500 people and had revenues of $536 million in 2004.
